Richard Fulton Hutchinson was born August 19, 1921 in a farm house in Jackson County, Ohio. He departed this life on October 11, 2018.

Richard’s life took him from that farm house in rural Jackson to Columbus Ohio. As was common during that time, Hutch went out to find work at age 14 to help provide for his family. He enjoyed farming and it came natural for him to take on various jobs working on farms. He also took on other jobs from working in the coal mine to Davis Brick Company. Even from his very humble beginnings he was a person of great character, compassion and concern for his family and friends. Although he was a good student, he sacrificed an opportunity to achieve a High School diploma, by working to support his family during the Depression. He continued to provide for his family by joining the Army Air Corps in 1947, sending his pay check from Florida to his mother in Oak Hill, while still fulfilling his service to his country.

His lack of a High School diploma did not stop him from creating his own Trucking Business in a growing Columbus Ohio. It is in Columbus where Hutch met Irene Richardson through mutual friends in the early 1950s. Irene had a daughter, Deane, whose relationship with Hutch most likely “sealed the deal” for the couple’s union in 1953. From this union came Richelle “Sue” Hutchinson and Richard Hutchinson Jr. The young family started in a home in the urban core of Columbus, but Hutch and Irene had grown up on farms, and they wanted to give their children an opportunity of a spacious lot with a new house. After years of looking, a friend sold a lot in the suburbs to them and they built the house on Bellevue and moved in 1965, where Hutch continued to live. It was a home filled with love of family, welcoming of friends and extended family to enjoy good conversation, food, and the fun of watching home movies.

Always proud to be a “farm-boy”, Hutch maintained a garden in Columbus and one in the ‘Country’, that meant an hours long trip back and forth often after finishing chores at home that included working on his truck(s). He was a hard worker all of his life, that is just a part of who he was. He always had a project that he was working on and always someone that needed a little extra care.

When thinking of Hutch there are three things that always stand out. 1) He never met a stranger, 2) He was a very hard working and caring family man, and 3) He helped build a lot of the buildings still standing today in the Columbus, Ohio area.

As a part of being a family man, the family always took time to travel together. There was a long-awaited trip to go out West during the 1960s. That never happened while the kids were young, but they did finally get to take the trip when they were all adults. However, the trip took a turn in the direction of adventure. The motor home broke down in the middle of Wyoming and the family broke rank. Sue and Irene quickly made it to the nearest hotel while Hutch and Richard created their own adventure taking on the repairs. What could have been frustrating to some became an opportunity for a new project for those two. Even in failing health ‘Hutch’ was determined to make it to the Hutchinson Reunion and a month later to his wife’s family Oliver Reunion in Upstate New York. He said to his daughter ‘I need to go for the last time’.

Hutch was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Hutchinson Fultz, sister, Almira Black, daughter Deane Richardson Nolan, and grandson Brent Tobin Jr. Left to cherish his memories are his children, Richelle Hutchinson and Richard (Debbie) Hutchinson; grandchildren, Bryon (Christian) Tobin Sr., Damond (Brandy) Porter, Bianca Nolan, Richard “Corey” Hutchinson, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A viewing and funeral service will be held on Sunday October 21, 2018 at Corinth Missionary Baptist Church the viewing will be held from 1-2pm and the service will be from 2-3pm with repast following.
