Shirley Jean (Smith) Rikard, age 74, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 11:41 PM.  She bravely battled cancer over the past two years.  Shirley lived in Columbus, Ohio. 

 

Shirley was born on February 1, 1950, to Charles and Verna (Fultz) Smith.  She was the first child of seven.  Shirley was a member of Corinth Missionary Baptist Church, of Oak Hill, Ohio.  Shirley attended Jackson High School before moving to Columbus, Ohio.  As a youth, she was a member of the 4-H club and during one of her teenage years, she won the Queen Contest at the Gallia County Emancipation Celebration.

 

Shirley was the mother of four children: Christopher Garnes, Danette Garnes, Lucinda Rikard and Margaret Rikard. 

 

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by brothers, Clifford Smith, Sr.; Wayne Smith, Sr., and John Smith Sr.; her sister, Phyllis (Susie) Smith McCarter Udoh; her second husband, Willie Rikard; and one grandson, DeShawn Hawkins. 

 

Surviving is her son, Christopher (Yolanda) Garnes, daughters, Danette Garnes, Margaret (Mario) Holmes, and Lucinda (Arthur) Thompson; grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She also leaves to mourn her sisters, Martha (Roger) Cosby and Marie Edwards, and a host of other relatives and friends. 

 

Shirley was a loving, kind, generous and thoughtful person.  She always had a smile on her face.  She always wanted to do for others, especially her children. 

 

Visitation hours will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 11-12 at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home in Jackson.  A graveside service will follow at 1:00 at Corinth Cemetery in Oak Hill with Reverend Lewis B. McCarter officiating.  Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.

Condolences to the family. I went to school with her one year at Jackson High School. Such a sweet person.
