Margaret Irene Black, 102, passed away on December 10th in Louisville KY with family at her side. She was born November 6, 1920, in Franklin Township. She was a life-long resident of Jackson County except for a few years after graduating in 1939 that she spent in Dayton, Ohio during World War II. She was an employee of Air Service Command at Patterson Field, Fairfield, Ohio. She returned to Oak Hill, where she worked at Oak Hill Hospital and later at Winter Products where she retired in 1988. Margaret was a member of the Franklin Valley Methodist Church, and she served as the treasurer of the church and of the Franklin Valley Cemetery.


She was preceded in death by her parents: John L and Artilla E (Cherrington) Black, brothers: Charles W and Dale A Black, sister-in-law: Charlotte Black and nieces: Mary and JoAnn Black.


She is survived by her nephews: Bob (late JoAnn) Black of Enon, Ohio, Tom (Pam) Black of Columbus, Ohio, John (Debbie) Black of Oak Hill, Ohio and nieces: Susan Black and Cathy (Jeff) Gooch of Louisville, KY., great nephews and nieces: Darren (Jen) Black, Lesley Black-Fontana, Cecila Black, Ryan (Jen) Black, John Black and Heather Black. Also surviving are several great great nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank their cousin, Greg Ervin and his wife Kay for all they did for her, especially during the time she spent at the Holzer Assisted Living in Jackson.


Margaret loved traveling, she especially enjoyed the organized bus tours that left from Ashland, KY. Her favorite trip was her week-long trip to Switzerland. She described it as one of the most beautiful places that she had ever seen. She also loved building puzzles and completed a puzzle of the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, Switzerland that she visited. Margaret was also very interested in the family genealogy and helped with gathering information for The Cherrington Family History and Genealogy book.


Visitation hours will be held on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home in Jackson. Funeral Services will begin at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Franklin Valley Cemetery in Jackson with Rev Janie Karl officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Franklin Valley Cemetery, C/O John Black - Trustee, 1249 Clay Banner Road, Oak Hill, Ohio 45656.
