Frederick Leslie Stokes Sr., of Jackson, Ohio, passed away Friday, May 22nd, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on July 29, 1936, and later moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he spent his formative years and attended Lafayette High School. A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fred also proudly served in the United States Army Reserves. He remained a staunch defender of the U.S. Constitution throughout his life.
Following college, he began a distinguished career with Ohio Valley Electric Company, a division of American Electric Power, where he dedicated his entire professional life. He was a pioneer in the field of environmental engineering, making lasting contributions to his industry and community.
A devoted fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes, Fred achieved an extraordinary personal milestone by attending 65 consecutive years of home football games, a testament to his passion and loyalty.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer; his son, Rick; his former wife and lifelong best friend, Mickey; his sister, Pat; his grandchildren, Sophia, Maya, Jonathan, and Ty; his son-in-law, Matthew; his daughter-in-law, Barbara; nieces and nephews, Susan, David, Robert, John, Michael, and Jeffrey; many extended family members, close friends, and dear neighbors who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma; his father, Fred; and his sister, Sue.
Fred was known for bringing joy, humor, and warmth to all who knew him. In retirement, he continued to give back to his community by founding the Jackson High School chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He ensured it was an inclusive organization, welcoming all students—regardless of faith or athletic background. He was also a member of Christ United Methodist Church and active in the Methodist Men’s group.
Having studied creative writing in college under Walter Tevis, Fred loved a good story—whether in literature, film, or conversation. His meticulous nature made him an excellent craftsman and problem solver, and he enjoyed everything from home projects to model shipbuilding. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and friends. At his request, he leaves this simple and heartfelt message for all who knew him: “I love you and thank you for all the good times.”
Fred’s legacy of dedication, kindness, and community spirit will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A “Celebration of Life” is planned for Saturday, August 1st, 2026, close to what would have been his 90th birthday, in Jackson, Ohio. Details will be shared at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
