Nelson Lewis Paynter II

Nelson Lewis Paynter II, age 91, went home to be with the Lord on November 15, 2018, at his home surrounded by family and with his wife, Esther, at his side. A devoted husband and committed father and grandfather, Nelson was born on January 25, 1927, in Minnesota.

Nelson and Esther enjoyed 56 years of marriage and nearly 3 decades of retirement life together, much of which they spent in Florida. They returned to Ohio to be with family when their health began to decline. It was their children’s privilege to have provided care for him.

Nelson proudly served in the Unites States Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He retired from Asbestos Workers Union Local 44. Faith was very important to him no matter where he lived: he was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Columbus, Ohio, of Kirkersville Apostolic Church (Ohio), of Cornerstone UPC in Ocala, Florida, of Steadfast Church in Grove City, Ohio, and finally of Elevate Ministries in Jackson, Ohio.

He is survived by his loving wife who, with love and strength, took on the care of raising his children, Esther nee Morris, and by his daughter, Aileen Strange who was his primary caregiver, and by his sons, Stephen (Cheryl) Paynter, and Nelson “Skip” (Susan) Paynter. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild with another on the way.

Nelson was proceeded in death by his parents, and siblings, by his first wife, the mother of his four children, Antoinette nee DiLorenzo, by his daughter, Carmella Oliver, by his son-in-law, Russell G. Strange, and by his granddaughter-in-law, Jinah Oliver.

Visitation and Service will be Saturday, December 1, 2018, at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home, 28 Harding Avenue, Jackson, Ohio, 45640. Visitation begins at noon followed by a service at 1:00 p.m. officiated by his eldest grandson, Pastor Russ Strange. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
