Charlene “Joanne” Wilson Hughes, age 82, of Wellston, Ohio passed away Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, at her residence. She was born January 26th, 1943, in Davisville within Coalton, Ohio to the late Charles and Madge (Wyatt) Goheen.
Joanne was a graduate of Coalton School in the 1960’s where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Sammy Wilson Sr. and moved to Connecticut where Sammy was stationed in the Army. After having two children, Jeffrey and Penelope, they moved to Minnesota where they lived for two years. After fulfilling his service time, Joanne and Sammy moved to Columbus, Ohio where Joanne was a homemaker. Together they had two more children, Sammy Jr. and Christopher. They later divorced and Joanne moved to Jackson, Ohio and raised all four of their children by herself, doing an amazing job. She even had time to graduate from Southeastern Business College where she earned a degree in Business Accounting. Joanne later married Elmer Hughes and moved back to Davisville until his passing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Jeffrey (Mary Wilson, Penelope Wilson, Sammy Wilson Jr., Christopher Wilson, and Denver Layne; her grandchildren: Holly (LJ) Qualls of Minnesota, Haylie (Jerry) Russell, Kayci Wilson, Kelsey (Harry) Ostrander, and Candace Hughes, all of Wellston, Ohio, and Brandon (Tabby) Wilson of Washington Courthouse, Ohio; and great-grandchildren: Zoey, Jerry Jr., Aria, Letty, Amaya, Roy, Rhianna, Kaiser, Khalani, Landon, Laykin, and Legend.
Besides her parents, Charlene was preceded in death by husband, Elmer Hughes; ex-husband, Sammy Wilson Sr.; grandson, Jeremy Alan Hughes; and brothers, Williard and Oscar “Jimmy Goheen.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 12th, 2025, from 12-2PM at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Jackson with a funeral service beginning at 2PM. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
