Herbert “Grant” Rhodes, age 94, of Oak Hill, Ohio, and also lovingly known as “Mr. Walmart”, passed from this life into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ on December 20th, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was greeted in Heaven by his beloved wife, Lila J. (Wise) Rhodes who preceded him in death in 2012. Grant was born in Knox, Pennsylvania on May 18th, 1929, to the late Clarence and Ethel (Boyer) Rhoads.


Grant was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War in which he served in the Army Reconnaissance Intelligence agency. He and his loving wife, Lila were church planters and pastored for 50 years. He retired from A.P. Green Refractories and then became a Walmart greeter for 20 years. Grant also owned and operated Rhodes Insurance and Tax Services until officially retiring from preparing taxes and bookkeeping in 2022.


He faithfully attended the Trinity Wesleyan Church in Oak Hill, Ohio and loved his church family dearly.


Grant loved his family second only to God. Left behind to cherish his memory are his son, Daniel (Felicia) Rhodes of Oak Hill, Ohio; daughters, Linda (Stephen) White of Columbus, Ohio and Miriam (Jerry) Ireland of Oak Hill, Ohio; 7 grandchildren: Joanna (John) Strawser, Ruthie (Tracy) Williams, Jonathan (Brittany) Rhodes, Derrick (Brittany) Rhodes, Tucker (Alison) Rhodes, David (Shannon) Ireland, and Brittany Ireland Rhodes; and 13 great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Caleb, Alyssa, Matthew, Taylor, Brayden, Maddy, Lila, Haley, Gracie, Payton, Hadley, and Rowan.


In addition to his parents, Clarence and Ethel and his wife, Lila he was preceded in death by a stillborn, infant child; 6 brothers: Donald Rhoads, Harland Rhoads, Karl Rhoads, Romaine Rhoads, Norman Rhoads, and Arthur Rhoads; as well as 2 sisters, Mary Minich and Eva Keely.


Grant will be remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, in addition to his genuine love for people. He was loved deeply and will be missed by a host of friends and family.


Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 22nd, 2023, from 5-8PM at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 23rd, 2023, at 11AM at the funeral home with Rev. Kevin Terry officiating. Burial will follow at Horeb Cemetery where Grant will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Lila. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
