Barbara Fay Wolford, age 85, passed away Monday, January 27th, 2025, at Holzer Senior Care. Barbara was born October 4th, 1939, in Wayne County, West Virginia to the late Dewey and Cora (Miller) Gillispie.
After obtaining her GED, Barbara promptly enrolled at the University of Rio Grande where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Social Work graduating Magna Cum Laude. She then went on to attend the University of Dayton obtaining her master’s degree in the same field. After graduating, Barbara was employed with Woodland Centers (Hopewell) and with the 317 Board holding positions as counselor and deputy director.
Barbara had a love for reading and literature, especially poetry. Her children fondly recall she always had a hot meal on the table and was known for her homemade cinnamon rolls and hot rolls.
She is survived by her daughters: Lois Cox of Gallipolis, Ohio and Sherrie Cox of Rio Grande, Ohio; sons, Jeff (Rhonda) Cox of Thurman, Ohio, and Mike Barry of Thurman, Ohio; grandchildren: Jessica Peterson of Gallipolis, Ohio, Jennifer (Jeremy) Conley of Huntington, West Virginia, Michael (Tiffany) Barry of Rio Grande, Ohio, Megan Adkins of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Wyatt Cox of Thurman, Ohio; great-grandchildren: Karina Barry, Hunter Peterson, and Gunnar Peterson; siblings: Arlene Curran, Alberta Zarbaugh, Pat (Bob) Francisco, Harvey (Donna) Gillispie, Betty (Jack) Ferris, Jeannie (Keith) Marlow, Oakley (Charlotte) Gillispie, and Carrie (Ermal) Adkins; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Carla Abshire and Carla Speakman Snyder.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thelmer Wolford; daughter, Debra Gloss; and siblings: Bonnie Spence, Dewey Gillispe Jr., and Ronnie Gillispie.
Barbara loved her children dearly and they will miss her every day.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, from 12-2PM at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill with a funeral after at 2PM with Greg Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Creek Cemetery in Lawrence County. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
