Thelma L. (Adkins) Rakes, of Oak Hill, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023, at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson at the age of 86. She was born April 14, 1937, in Midkiff, West Virginia, to the late Matthew Adkins and Esta (Bragg) Adkins.


She is survived by her seven children: Janet (John) Forshey, Deborah (Michael) Hall, Timothy (Karla) Rakes, Polly (David Clyde) Hurd, John (Denise) Rakes, June (Chuck) McNeely, and Rushie Richmond; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and her fur baby, “Stewie”.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Delmar Ray Rakes; siblings: Jr. Lovejoy, Frank Miller, Wade Adkins, Gordon Adkins, Corbin Adkins, Lowell Thomas Adkins, Reed Adkins and Albert Collins; her sister, Anna Crabtree; son-in-law, Richard “Rick” Richmond; grandson, Thomas Anthony Rakes; and great-grandson, Levi Ray Edwards.


Thelma was a member of the Church of Christ of Jackson, Ohio. She had worked at Campbell’s mushroom Plant in Jackson from 1978 until she retired in 1998. She loved to read, paint, sew and scroll through Facebook. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds from her window and enjoyed flowers and many different aspects of nature.


Per her wishes, a graveside service and burial will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023, at 2:00 PM at the Adkins Family Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lewisgillum.com.
