Ryan Sean Borden, a former resident of Oak Hill and Jackson, who recently resided in Columbus, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2023, after being hospitalized for a week for respiratory problems caused by a severe infection. He was 33. A native of Portsmouth, Ryan was the son of Sandy and Scott Borden of Jackson, who survive.

As a 6-foot-2 forward on Oak Hill High School’s basketball team, Ryan helped win the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s 2009 Division IV State Boys Basketball Championship during his senior year. The YouTube video “Ryan Borden 3 Point Shots” that compiles Ryan’s 3-pointers in the championship game that went into two overtimes has been viewed more than 9,500 times. He developed his skill on the court during his grade school years by attending basketball camps at the University of Rio Grande, University of Notre Dame, and University of Maryland. He was named MVP for his age group at the Maryland camp.

Ryan graduated from the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in education.

He had an avid love of music, animals, and all sports. He particularly enjoyed family vacations and going to Notre Dame football games in Indiana with his mom and dad. Helping people also made him happy.

In addition to his parents, Ryan is survived by two uncles, B.J. Almond, of Houston and Todd Borden of Springfield, Ohio; and two aunts, Kelly Borden of Enon, Ohio, and Tiffiny Borden of Troy, Ohio; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents: Ben and Mona Almond, Donna and Richard Borden, and Mildred and Tom Macbrair; and an aunt, Pamela Harkless.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2023, at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home, 28 Harding Ave., in Jackson. A funeral Mass officiated by Father Thomas William Herge will be held at noon Friday, June 30, 2023, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 215 Columbia St., in Jackson.
