Jon V. Cherrington, age 67, was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on October 28, 1954, and went home to be with the Lord on February 3, 2022, in his home with his children and wife by his side. Jon was one of five children of Paul and Dolly (Crace) Cherrington. His siblings, also born to Paul and Dolly, include Ervin Cherrington, Rose Walters, Rhonda Gatrell, and LuAnn Campell. Jon married his elementary school sweetheart, Beverly (Lewis) Cherrington, on July 12, 1975. Born to this union were his three children, all of whom survive: Ashley Cherrington, Tyler (Shelina) Cherrington, and Clinton Cherrington. Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Colter and Mesa Cherrington, the son and daughter of Tyler and Shelina Cherrington, who lovingly referred to him as “Papa Jon.”

Jon felt that his life’s most prominent accomplishment was the family that he lovingly raised, and he often exemplified this belief by quoting the Alan Jackson lyric: “His greatest contribution is the ones you leave behind.” His most distinguished gift and legacy to both his family and friends was his unwavering love, his steadfast guidance, and his unshakeable conviction in Jesus Christ. Jon was the embodiment of strength, faith, honor and dependability, and his uncompromising moral code served as a foundation for his family to build upon in their own lives. His passion for leading his family was unmatched, and he illustrated a life well-lived in all that he did. Even the smallest interaction with Jon felt impactful and profound, and the indelible impression he left on others will ensure that he will live on in the hearts of all those that he encountered throughout his life. His love for God and family, was closely proceeded by his love for the outdoors, horses, and the West.

Jon continued operating JVC Metals, previously known as Cherrington Scrap Metals, which was founded in Oak Hill in 1957 by his father, Paul. He was a well-known and well-respected businessman in the Oak Hill community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Dolly Cherrington.

Jon will be forever missed by his wife of 46 years, his family, and his friends. In memory of Jon, he has requested contributions be made in lieu of flowers to SOMC Hospice at 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662.

Friends and family may call Sunday, February 6, 2022, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. A public graveside service will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022, at 4:00 p.m. at the C.M. Cemetery in Oak Hill. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
