Jeanene McCain passed away peacefully at Jenkins Care Community on Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, at age 90. We are so thankful for the loving care she received there and from SOMC Hospice. Jeanene was born in Lawrence County Ohio on September 29, 1930. She was the daughter of the late William Robert and Garnet (McCorkle) Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband, of sixty-nine years, Estle (Boss) McCain on January 6, 2020.


Jeanene is survived by her children; Terry McCain (Sharon), Vicky Retterer (Kent) and Cheryl Elcess (Joe); grandchildren: Zachary McCain (Leslie), Ally Hale (Westen), Andy Elcess (Kara) and Drew McCain (Meghan); special family member, Stephen Hughes (Victoria); great-grand children: Carver Conley, Sawyer McCain, Addy Conley, Lila McCain, Hank Elcess, Jaxon McCain, Landon McCain, Reid Elcess, Eli McCain, Logan McCain, Sam Elcess and Nora Hale; siblings: Calvin (Buck) Lewis (Bev) and Sandy McCain (Karl); in-laws: Barb Lewis, Joe Duly, Helen Lewis, Vergie Smittle, Marvin (Mike) and Kay McCain; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Billy Lewis, who died in infancy, Beulah DeHart, Cedrick (Dick) Lewis, Betty Kiser, Lemoyne (Leigh) Myers, Phylis Duly, Robert Dale (Bobby) Lewis, Carol Lewis and Marydel Starcher.


Jeanene was a dedicated schoolteacher and retired from Oak Hill Schools after thirty years of teaching. She enjoyed her students and co-workers. In addition to teaching, she enjoyed church activities, gardening, quilting, canning, cooking for family, and baking her famous pies. Jeanene was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and spent a lot of time volunteering for her church. She was a loving caregiver to her husband, Boss, and her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a hardworking, kind and gentle soul with a deep love for her family.


Friends may call Saturday, September 18th, 2021, from 11-1 pm at the Lewis and Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1 pm. with Pastor Stan Howard officiating.
