Charles Richard Slagle, age 92, of Columbus, formerly of Oak Hill, passed away Friday, January 6, 2023, at Harmony Trace in Hilliard. He was born April 22, 1930, in Oak Hill to the late John M. and Myrtle Blanche (McLaughlin) Slagle.


Richard retired from Caldwell Chrysler in Columbus for whom he had worked as an auto mechanic for many years. He was very active in the Brutal Brothers, a division of the Aladdin Temple Shrine in Columbus until his health began to fail.


He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Donna Stoner and her family, Mike and Debra Stoner, Susan (George) Ells, and Diane Stoner, all of Columbus; a sister, Martha Detty Foster, of Oak Hill; one niece, Barbara Detty McCready, of Huber Heights; three nephews, Dick Detty, of Oak Hill, Jay (Mindy) Detty, of Marysville, and Jack (Teresa) Detty, of Jackson; four great nieces, Carmen (Larry) Malone, of Morral, Ohio, Laura (Cody) Schanfish, of Huber Heights, Monica (Jason) Miller, of Marysville, Ohio, and Tess (Joe) Simmering, of Jackson; four great nephews, Pete (Lisa) Detty, of Waynesville, Carl Detty, of Morral, Ohio, Shane Poling of Marysville, Ohio, Patrick McCready, of Huber Heights, and Johnathon (Tiffany) McManis, of Jackson; six great nieces, Shannon, Addison, Taylor, Breanna, Haley, and Kinnison; four great great nephews, Austin, Zachary, Tristan, Ethan, Owen,and Jax.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Ferne (Herbert) Slagle; ten-year-old brother, John Menthyl Jr; a niece, Nancy Detty, and a great great nephew, Ashton Gregory Wild.


After his retirement, he had two favorite hobbies that he pursued vigorously, wood working and drawing, and he produced many beautiful pieces in each. In 1987, he met Donna Stoner. She and Richard became great friends and companions and spent many years together traveling, helping each other, and enjoying life. Richard became a Christian many years ago and was an avid Bible scholar for much of his adult life. He had spent the last several months as a resident of Harmony Trace Nursing Facility in Hilliard, until his death.


Visitation will be Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from 11-1 PM at the Lewis & Gillum Funeral Home of Oak Hill. Funeral services will immediately follow at 1:00 with Pastor Jeff Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in C.M. Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.lewisgillum.com.
