Jackson

Carol Lee Slavens (Walke), 71, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2025, in her home in Jackson. A vibrant and adventurous spirit, Carol lived a life filled with purpose, passion and joy.

Born on November 23, 1953, Carol was the daughter of Denver P. Walke and Averill J. Walke, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Jackson High School in 1972 and went on to pursue her academic interests with determination and enthusiasm. She studied Biology at The Ohio State University before earning a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Rio Grande. Her commitment to education continued with a Masters degree in Educational Administration from Ohio University.

Carol dedicated her professional life to Jackson City Schools, where she worked tirelessly to support students and foster a love of learning. Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom – she believed deeply in the power of knowledge to transform lives and was especially devoted to children’s growth and development.

Carol’s life was rich with interests that reflected her dynamic personality. She had an enduring love for nature and animals, generously supporting various wildlife and animal organizations. Her beloved dogs held a very special place in her heart. An avid traveler, she sought out new cultures and experiences whenever she could, always eager to explore the world around her. Whether walking scenic trails, swimming with friends or fondly strolling through her hometown neighborhoods, Carol found joy in being outdoors and staying active.

The the hills and heritage of Appalachia were part of her soul, and she found peace and contentment sitting on her porch, overlooking her land and taking in the beauty of the place she called home.

Carol was part of the Century club, even reigning President for some time and was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, honoring her roots and carrying forward the traditions and values of her family’s history.

She was known for her vivacity and charm – always ready with a smile and laugh that could illuminate any room. Loyal to those she loved and full of happiness that she readily shared, Carol was truly a force of nature.

Carol was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jackson, where her faith provided strength and community.

She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, William S. Slavens; her brother, Paul A. Walke; three children, Andrew (Colleen) Brown, Leah A. (Jeremy) Bayless, and Brenna K. (Tyler) Lansden; as well as five cherished grandchildren who brought immense radiance into her life.

Carol Slavens leaves behind a legacy of compassion, curiosity, laughter and unwavering dedication to others. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
